Sooner Advances in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY—The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team finished the second day of competition Thursday at the ITA Central Regional Championship Tournament with Sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu advancing to the singles second round.

During the qualifying round on Wednesday the Sooners went 6-3 in singles play. Tara Eckel, Maria Kalashnikova and Marie Huet qualified for the singles main draw after winning two matches on Wednesday. Peta Maree Lancaster won her first round, but was defeated by Kudlakova from Kansas State in the second round; 6-4, 6-2. Brittany Baldy and Kristina Radan were both defeated in the first round.

During the Main Draw Thursday the Sooners went 1-3 in both doubles and singles. Constantinescu, who qualified for the main draw prior to the tournament, defeated Kudlakova from Kansas State, 7-6(4), 6-3 in singles. In doubles, Huet teamed with Lancaster to defeat Iowa State duo, Karonis and Macedo, 8-2. The Sooner duo was then defeated in the second round by Belassi and Milewski from Colorado, 8-2.

The Sooners will continue competition in Salt Lake City on Friday. Constantinescu will compete in the second round of the singles Main Draw while Kalashnikova, Eckel, and Huet will begin the consolation rounds.
