Sooners Begin Competition in Evanston

EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team began the first day of competition Friday at the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern University.

The Sooners went 5-3 overall in the first round of singles draws. Returners Ana-Maria Constantinescu, Brittany Baldy and Kristin Gray and newcomers Peta Maree Lancaster and Marie Huet won in the first round while Tara Eckel, Maria Kalashnikova and Kristina Radan were defeated.

In doubles action the Sooners went 3-2 overall. Kalashnikova teamed with Lancaster defeated Adamcek and Mathis from Louisiana State, 8-1, and Baldy who was teamed with Gray defeated Ivanova and Wickman of Michigan State, 8-6. Huet and Radan were defeated in the first round but went on to defeat Robinson and Wolf from LSU, 9-7, in the consolation round.

The Sooners hope to continue their success throughout the rest of the competition on Saturday and Sunday.
