NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team ended its three-day, three-team match with a 4-3 win over Marquette University at Helfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis.
Oklahoma fell behind early, dropping the doubles point by losing two of three doubles spots. The Sooners lone doubles victory came from Rachael Cox and Elena Antakova at the No. 3 spot. The duo defeated Maria Calbeto and Erin Watkins 8-4.
"We got off to a very slow start," OU head coach Mark Johnson said. "We still have some things to work on in doubles but it is early. We will continue to work and get better each match."
The Sooners fought back in singles action, claiming victories in four of six matches. OU was once again led by No. 33-ranked freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu, who is now 3-0. Constantinescu tied the score 1-1 by defeating Marquette's Lauren Little 7-5, 6-2.
Senior Chelsea Orr took victory at the No. 2 spot playing to a 6-3, 3-2 lead before the Golden Eagle's Kylie Moore was forced to retire due to an injury.
Oklahoma's losses came at the Nos. 4 and 5. Marquette's Maria Calbeto downed junior Elena Antakova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while senior Christi Baxley was forced to retire during the third set of her match with Christina Ruiz.
"I was pleased with how the girls played in singles," Johnson said. "I thought they really fought hard and finished strong."
The women's tennis team will return to action Friday, Feb. 1, when they host Oklahoma Baptist University in Oklahoma City, Okla. The starting time has not yet been decided. For updates check SoonerSports.com.
