Boulder, Colo. - The women's tennis team opened its fall season strong Friday in Boulder Colo. with senior Chelsea Orr and freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu advancing to the semi-finals of the singles draw. Oklahoma walked away from the first day of play with a 6-4 team record.
Orr started the day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over UNC's Karen Groll. In the quarterfinals, Orr faced freshman teammate Maria Kalashanikova, who advanced by defeating Colorado State's Lauren Strasburger 6-4, 6-1. The two played a tough three set match with the senior claiming the victory 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Constantinescu began her collegiate career with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNC's Manuela Santos. She then defeated Colorado's Gleisy Torres Torres 6-4, 6-4 earning her a spot in a semifinals match.
Sooners Christi Baxley and Tara Eckel also played in the singles draw, both dropping their first round matches.
Baxley fell 6-1, 7-6 (3) to Colorado's Abbie Probert before defeating Tiffany Knopp of UNC 7-6 (10) 6-2.
Eckel fell in the first round 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2), to Colorado's Melisa Esposito. She was then defeated 6-1, 6-1, by Tabitha Knopp of UNC.
The Sooners will begin play again Saturday at 10 a.m. CST. They will play one round of singles before breaking for the day to attend the OU v. Colorado football game.
