NORMAN, Okla. - Former Sooner standout Anda Perianu has been keeping the tennis circuit hot since her career at Oklahoma ended in 2004. Aside from entering her second season as the volunteer coach for her alma mater, she has made appearances in numerous tournaments on the Pro Circuit.
Her appearances in majors began last January when Perianu advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw at the Australian Open, defeating the No. 7 seed to get there.
At the beginning of the summer Perianu began her summer of traveling, playing in a series of tournaments in Europe including the French Open, which is played on clay. At the French Open, Perianu won two matches to earn a spot in the final round of qualifying, before falling.
While in Europe, Perianu also made an appearance at the tournament of all tournaments, Wimbledon. Her experience at Wimbledon was a déjà vu experience. After winning two difficult matches in the first two rounds of qualifying, Perianu was defeated in the final round.
"It is hard to be so close to qualifying for the main draw and then not make it," said Perianu.
After her time in Europe, Perianu headed back to the states where she began the hard court season. She made appearances at tournaments in Boston, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Ohio and Lexington Ken., before she headed to the U.S. Open Qualifying tournament in New York.
Perianu opened the first round of qualifying with a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over China's Meng Yuan. She then advanced to the second round where she fell to Great Britian's Naomi Cavaday 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-7 (5).
The former Sooner, whose goal is to make it into the top 100 by the end of the year, will continue to play tournaments around the world and yet still make time for the Sooners of today.
