NORMAN, Okla. - SoonerSports.com recently caught up with sophomore Vaclav Kucera (pronounced VAS-clav KU-che-ra) of the men's tennis team to see how he's keeping himself busy during the summer.
Kucera is back in his hometown of Kladno in the Czech Republic for the summer after taking May intersession classes in Norman.
Besides honing his tennis skills at his tennis club in Prague, Kucera is also taking advantage of the summer months by spending plenty of time with family and friends.
In addition, Kucera talks about his music rotation on his iPod, his favorite thing about Norman and what other sports he enjoys besides tennis:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
SS: What have you been doing this summer to sharpen your game?
VK: I'm playing tennis in Prague over the summer. I practice almost every day so I should stay in good tennis form. And I'm of course doing some conditioning as well.
SS: If you have been playing in any tournaments how have you done?
VK: I haven't played any tournaments over the summer.
SS: What are you doing with any of your free time now that you are home for the summer?
VK: I try to spend my free time with my family and best friends and have a great time with them. I'm also going to Bulgaria for my vacation now.
SS: You have been in Oklahoma for about a year now. What is your favorite thing about the state and the University of Oklahoma?
VK: I really like the people at OU and their mentality. I love our campus. I think it's really beautiful.
SS: What personal goals do you have between now and the first official practice of the season?
VK: Get myself ready for the season. Both physically and mentally. I want to be well prepared, which means I need to work hard now and come back to OU in good shape.
SS: What kind of workouts do you do to keep yourself in tennis shape?
VK: As I said, I'm practicing in Prague, in a very good tennis club where I can play and practice with great players and that keeps me in good shape. The most important thing is to work hard and results will come.
SS: Are you taking any summer school and if so how is that going?
VK: I took the May intersession, History of Jazz class and I finished with a B.
SS: Tell us something Oklahoma fans do not now about you?
VK: That I'm a big Formula One and soccer fan. And that I want to be the best college tennis player in America.
SS: What kind of music do you listen to?
VK: I don't have any special favorite music style. I can listen to the latest hits as well as to the old songs, I mean 80's and 90's. But I prefer pop and rock.
SS: What artists are in heavy rotation on your iPod?
VK: James Blunt, My Chemical Romance, Hinder and Blink 182
SS: Who is the biggest tennis celebrity you have met?
VK: I have met a lot of them. Jim Courier, Gustavo Kuerten and Rafael Nadal.
SS: If you weren't playing tennis, what would you play?
VK: Maybe soccer... Or I would just study and spend all the time in school.
SS: Do you watch any other sports?
VK: Formula One, soccer and basketball.
SS: What TV shows do you watch regularly?
VK: I don't watch TV too much.
SS: Why did you choose OU?
VK: OU had a serious interest in me and I knew it's a school with great history and possibilities. It seemed like the best choice for me and I am happy I am here.
SS: What is your favorite thing about Norman? Oklahoma?
VK: I like the quiet and peace in Norman. It's a nice small city. I like how everything is close and near.
