SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Another day, another honor for University of Oklahoma head track and field coach Martin Smith.
Smith, in his second season at OU, was named the Midwest Region Men's Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday.
Smith led the Sooner men to their first Midwest Regional title, a championship the team locked with two events remaining in the competition. Individually, Shardae Boutte won the men's triple jump and Kevin Bookout was the men's shot put champion.
The Sooners qualified a program record 14 men to the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including both relays for the first time since 1997.
The USTFCCCA honors the top men's and women's coaches in four regions. Honorees include the coaches of the top-ranked men's and women's teams, Bob Bramen of Florida State and Greg Kraft at Arizona State.
Smith was named District Men's Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA Monday and Big 12 Men's Coach of the Year last week.
The NCAA Championships begin Wednesday, June 6, at the Alex G. Spanos Track and Field Complex in Sacramento, Calif.
