NORMAN, Okla.The University of Oklahoma freshman Vaclav Kucera was named Big 12 men's tennis player of the week by the league office.
Kucera came to Oklahoma from the Czech Republic and has been a valuable asset to the Sooners this spring. Last week, Kucera went undefeated at the No. 1 singles slot, upsetting No. 28 Ben Harkett of Rice and No. 69 Andreas Siljestrom of Middle Tennessee State. His performance helped Oklahoma beat three nationally ranked teams No. 24 Rice, No. 39 Middle Tennessee State and No. 33 William & Mary including one top-25 squad to clinch the Rice Invitational.
Kucera is currently ranked 83rd by the ITA and is 13-1 in singles play (8-1 at the No. 1 slot) and 7-5 in doubles. Kucera is 4-1 against ranked opponents.
The Sooners will return to action Friday, March 30 in Lincoln, Neb. Oklahoma and Nebraska will sqaure off at 1 p.m. to begin Big 12 play.
