TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma freshman Maria Kalshnikova advanced to the main draw of the ITA Regional Championship Wednesday, after winning two matches in the 64 player qualifying draw. She will join teammates Chelsea Orr and Ana-Maria Constantinescu in the main draw, beginning Thursday.
Kalashnikova opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Stephanie Evans of Nebraska. She then defeated Missouri's Kaitlin Ritchie 6-1, 6-3, to earn a spot in the main draw.
"It was a good showing for Maria," said head coach Mark Johnson. "She came out and played hard."
Other Sooners entered in the qualifying draw included seniors Rachael Cox and Christi Baxley, sophomore Elena Antakova and freshman Tara Eckel.
Eckel started off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over SEMU's Kristal Drew. She then fell 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 to Brigham Young's Lisa Ezhova.
Baxley was defeated in the first round 6-4, 6-1 by New Mexico's Lucy Scott, while Cox fell to WSU's Anna Egorova in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2.
Antakova was defeated in straight sets in the first round falling 6-0, 6-4 to Julia Breaugger of DU. T
he Sooners will continue singles action Thursday morning with doubles play beginning Friday.
