NORMAN, Okla.-- Three members of the University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will be competing in the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All American in Tulsa, Okla., Saturday Sept. 30 and Sunday Oct. 1.
The pre-qualifier feeds into the 128-player qualifying tournament set for Oct. 2-4. Competing for the Sooners are junior Federico Chavarria, sophomore Sergey Avdeyev and freshman Ondrej Kacmar. No. 46 ITA-ranked senior Marek Velicka is the only Sooner to be admitted to the main draw, which will begin competition Oct. 5.
Chavarria and Velicka will team up for doubles competition. The duo will begin play in the qualifying tournament Tuesday Oct. 2.
“I think our players are excited and ready to get back out on the courts to compete against some of the nation's best,” said OU head coach Paul Lockwood. “We had a good week of practice and I know we are ready to play.”
Kacmar will be the first Sooner to compete, facing Rook Schellenberg of Texas, Saturday at 9 a.m. (CDT). Avdeyev will begin play at 10 a.m. against LSU's Kevin Dessauer.
The winners of the first round will advance to compete at 2:30 p.m.
Chavarria received a bye for the first round and will begin play at 2:30 p.m. He will face either Texas' Jonah Kane-West or Nebraska's James Clow.
