DALLAS, Texas -- Six University of Oklahoma men's tennis players landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Tennis teams, the league office announced Tuesday. Oklahoma, with four chosen for the first team and two picked for second-team honors, placed the most student-athletes of any Big 12 university on the squad.
"This is a great honor for the OU squad," said head coach Paul Lockwood. "I'm extremely proud of our players for the efforts they make in the classroom, and it shows the true quality of our student-athletes here at OU."
Seniors Tommy Garrison, Matt Long and Lee Gregg were among the 12 first team members. The seniors are no strangers to the honor, as all three have made the list before. Garrison, a mathematics major, has garnered first team honors for three consecutive years and was given special recognition as a sophomore and junior for maintaining a perfect 4.00 grade point average.
Long, a construction science major, landed on the second team as a sophomore and on the first team as a junior. Gregg, who is majoring in health and exercise science, also made the first team last year as a junior.
Sophomore Ryan Thomas was the other Sooner to earn first team honors. A business major, Thomas received the honor for the first time as he was not eligible for the honor as a freshman.
Listed among second team members were senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka. Ivanov is majoring in management information systems and was named to the first team for his sophomore and junior years. Velicka, who is majoring in business, also made the second team last year.
The all-league squad consists of 12 first team members combined with 10 on the second team. First team members must maintain a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team members must have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or for the previous two semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
