Men's Tennis Faces Two Weekend Road Matches

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team will compete in two road matches this weekend against No. 58 Alabama and No. 26 Auburn. The Sooners are set to face the Crimson Tide  on Friday in Tuscaloosa and will travel to Auburn to compete against the Tigers on Sunday.

Junior Marek Velicka will lead the Sooners at the No. 1 singles spot and will be joined by seniors Alexei Ivanov, Tommy Garrison, Lee Gregg and Matt Long and freshman Sergey Avdeyev.

Ivanov and Velicka will play at the No. 1 doubles spot, with Garrison and sophomore Federico Chavarria at No. 2 and Long and freshman Cale Planck at No. 3.


Oklahoma Hands Memphis 6-1 Loss
The Sooners earned another win on Sunday by defeating Memphis, 6-1, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. The Sooners improved to 3-2 in the spring season.

Memphis took its only point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The Sooners came back to dominate the Tigers in singles action by winning all matches in straight sets. Sophomore Ryan Thomas saw his first match of the spring and handed Garrison Pilant a 6-2, 7-6 defeat at the No. 6 spot.

Velicka, who played at No. 1, leads the team with a 3-1 spring record and a 9-3 overall mark in singles.


Match Notes
The Sooners are perfect at No. 3 doubles with a 3-0 record.
Junior Marek Velicka leads the team in winning percentage with a 3-1 (.750) spring record and a 9-3 (.750) overall mark.
Senior Matt Long will be playing in his first singles match of the spring.


Sooner Rankings
Two Sooners are ranked in the top 75 in the nation in the Fila Collegiate Tennis rankings, released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Junior Marek Velicka, who was ranked No. 35 in singles in the fall, jumped to No. 23 in the latest poll. Velicka also ranks No. 20 with teammate, senior Alexei Ivanov, in the doubles poll.

Oklahoma dropped one spot in the latest team poll, falling from No. 46 to No. 47.
