NORMAN, Okla. Three University of Oklahoma men's tennis players are listed among the top 125 Division I singles players in the country in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings. Oklahoma leads all other universities in the state in the number of singles players on the list and is tied for second in the Big 12.
At No. 35, junior Marek Velicka received the highest ranking of any Sooner in the poll. It also marks the highest preseason ranking of any Sooner in the past 15 years. In the 2004-05 season, Velicka was named to the All-Big 12 Singles team for the second straight year and claimed the 2004 ITA Fall Regional V Singles Championship. He went 16-9 in the spring at No. 1 singles and was 28-13 overall.
Senior Alexei Ivanov is also listed in the rankings at No. 71. Last season, he earned the most wins of his three-year career with an overall mark of 18-15. Competing at the No. 2 position, Ivanov was 8-4 and 6-1 versus Region V opponents.
Rounding out the list for Oklahoma is senior Tommy Garrison, listed as No. 125 in the rankings. As a junior, Garrison went undefeated at the No. 4 spot with an 11-0 record. He concluded the year with 17 consecutive wins, which is two shy of the school record.
Velicka, Ivanov, Garrison and the rest of the Sooner team will kick off the 2005 fall season Sept. 23-25 at the Baylor Intercollegiate in Waco, Texas.
