Mens Tennis Duo in ITA Indoor Championships

NORMAN, Okla.   Senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka look to claim the doubles title as they team up to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, from Nov. 3-6.

Ivanov and Velicka qualifield after winning the Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships in Tulsa in October. The indoor championships, hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus, willl feature a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles field for men and women. The fields will consist of qualifiers from the ITA Regional Championships, ITA National Small College Championships, Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships and the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.

“Playing in this tournament has been one of my dreams since I came here,” said Ivanov. “I'm really excited to be playing with Marek because I can rely on him, and I know he'll do his best. We're going to go out there and have fun, and hopefully we'll go far in the tournament.”

While Ivanov and Velicka compete in Columbus, three other Sooners will represent Oklahoma in the UNLV Fall Classic from Nov. 4-6 in Las Vegas, Nev. Seniors Tommy Garrison and Lee Gregg and true freshman Cale Planck will face players from Alabama, East Tennessee State, Fresno State, Illinois, Tennessee and UNLV in the tournament. Held at the Fertitta Tennis Complex, the tournament will feature two 16-spot flights of singles and one 16-team doubles draw plus singles consolation play. Six nationally ranked singles players will compete, including No. 34 Oscar Posado (ETSU), No. 85 Joel Kielbowicz (UNLV), No. 98 Jakub Cech (Fresno State), No. 107 Ruben Gonzales (Illinois), No. 109 Bobby Cameron (Tennessee) and No. 125 Garrison.

The three players will also compete in the doubles draw. Gregg and Planck will pair up for the tournament, while Garrison will be matched with a player from another school at the tournament.

“This is a great season-ending tournament,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “These three players have had good fall seasons, and I look forward to them completing the fall season with some good wins.”
