Mens Tennis Set To Begin Season in OKC

OU Mens Tennis Strikes Gold At The UNLV Invitational

The Oklahoma men's tennis team (4-0) swept Texas-Arlington, 4-0, in the championship match of the UNLV Invitational on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas. The Sooners bring home the tournament title for the first time since 1990. 

 OU crushed Texas-Arlington in the three singles matches finished. Freshman newcomer Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) flew to an easy victory over UTA's Sandy Farquharson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Velicka now has a perfect 4-0 record in singles play.

  Sophomore Tommy Garrison (Enid, Okla.) came back strong from his tough match last night by dominating UTA's Niels Buksik, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Silviu Tanasoiu (Sibiu, Romania) continues to remain undefeated after he defeated UTA's Ian Vazquez, 6-3, 6-2.  

 Despite one loss in doubles, the Sooners continued to remain solid. The No. 1 doubles pair of Velicka and Garrison came back from their first loss last night and conquered UTA's Nathan McGregor and Niels Buksik, 8-4. Junior Ondrej Fukala (Prerov, Czech Republic) and Tanasoiu overpowered UTA's Josey Trimmien and Van Renensburg, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.

 The only strenuous game of the day was junior Matt Long (Ft. Worth, Texas) and sophomore Alexei Ivanov's (Izhevsk, Russia) close 9-7 loss to UTA's David Corrie and Sandy Farquharson. The Sooner duo now have a 5-1 record this spring.
 
 Oklahoma moves on to a doubleheader match against Cowley Community College and East Central on Sun., Feb. 29, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooner men will face Cowley CC at 9 a.m. and East Central at 2 p.m.
