OU will open the 2005 indoor season on Jan. 14 with a trip to Fayetteville, Ark. The first indoor home meet is set for Jan. 22 when the Sooners host the OU Classic at the Mosier Indoor Facility. OU also will host the J.D. Martin Combined and Invitational meets on Feb. 4-5 and the Sooner Indoor on Feb. 19.
The annual John Jacobs Invitational will return in April after a year's absence while renovations were completed on the Sooners' home facility. That meet is set for April 16.
After a highly successful Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by the Sooners at John Jacobs last April, the University of Oklahoma will host the third annual NCAA Midwest Regional Track and Field Championships on May 27-28. Performances at the regional track and field championships advance student-athletes in all events, except the 10,000-meter run, decathlon and heptathlon, to the NCAA Championships scheduled June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
OU becomes the third Big 12 institution to host the prestigious regional meet. Nebraska hosted the initial meet in 2003 and Texas A&M was the host site in 2004.
"The University of Oklahoma is pleased to be named a host for the NCAA Regional Track and Field Championships,” said OU director of athletics Joe Castiglione. “We believe the improvements and renovations to Jacobs Track and Field make it one of the premier competition sites in the country. It offers a great venue for the competitor and the specators.
“We had so many postive comments after we hosted the Big 12 Championships last spring and a number of other conference coaches approached our coaches, encouraging them to put in a bid. Our department has a long and successful history of hosting NCAA competitions and we look forward to serving as the host for this most important competition this spring.”
The Sooners had a strong showing at the conference outdoor meet last April, producing Big 12 champions in DaBryan Blanton, who successfully defended his 100-meter crown, and Jessica Eldridge, who won the 800-meter title.
“We are pleased to host this meet,” OU co-head coaches Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price said. “Our student-athletes loved the chance to compete on their home facility last year after only a few days of practicing at the new facility. We look forward to the opportunity of sharing our facility with teams from throughout the midwest part of the country. We think our facility is one of the best around and there certainly aren't many others that have all the features that make this complex so friendly to the competitor and spectator alike.”
The NCAA Midwest Region is made of up 39 institutions that sponsor men's and women's track and field teams in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
