Perianu Concludes Successful Season At NCAA Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) completed one of the best individual seasons in Oklahoma women's tennis history as she fell to Georgia's third-ranked and fourth-seeded Agata Cioroch, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Individual Championships Monday at the Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
Perianu, the 2003 Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Year, finished the individual portion of her season at 27-6 overall, 22-3 at No. 1 singles and 57th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings. With one season remaining she sports the best career winning percentage in Oklahoma women's tennis history with a mark of 49-13 (.790).
Perianu won Big 12 Co-Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors on April 15 and was also named to the All-Big 12 first team for the second straight year in singles. She posted a 10-1 mark at No. 1 singles this spring against conference opponents to win the Big 12 Women's Tennis Position Championship at that spot.
The season is not over as Perianu and doubles partner, sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa), are set to compete in the 32-team NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Doubles Championships tomorrow. The duo are riding a five-match win streak and will face off with Tulane's 10th-ranked pair of Jenny Kuhn and Julie Smekodub.
Perianu and Saluri are ranked a season-best 30th in the ITA doubles rankings while sporting an overall record of 23-3. The All-Big 12 first team in doubles selections have been solid at No. 1 for OU winning 18 matches while dropping only two. They also tallied a 3-1 record against ranked foes.
