NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) was selected to compete in the field of 64 at the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Individual Championships, the NCAA announced Thursday. In addition, Perianu and doubles partner, sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa), were chosen to compete in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championships.
The two championships are scheduled for May 19-24 at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis complex on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Fla.
Perianu, the 2003 Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Year, is making her her second consecutive trip to the NCAA individual competition. Last year, the 2002 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year traveled to the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., and proceeded to push Florida's Jessica Lehnhoff to three sets before falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
This season, Perianu is 27-4 overall, 22-2 at No. 1 singles, 5-1 versus ranked opponents and 57th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings. She's been on a roll winning 12 matches in a row while boosting her career winning percentage to .817, the highest in Oklahoma women's tennis history.
Besides earning conference player of the year honors, Perianu was also named to the All-Conference first team for the second straight year in singles. She posted a 10-1 mark at No. 1 this spring against conference opponents to win the Big 12 Women's Tennis Position Championship at No. 1 singles.
Perianu and Saluri are ranked a season-best 30th in in the ITA doubles rankings while sporting an overall record of 22-3. They were recently selected to the All-Conference first team in doubles for the first time in their careers. The duo has been solid at No. 1 for OU this spring winning 17 matches and only dropping two. They also went 3-1 against ranked foes this season.
The 35th-ranked Sooners (19-6) host the first and second rounds of the NCAA team championships on May 10-11 at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. Oklahoma is slated to play 32nd-ranked Alabama (17-7) on Saturday, May 10 at 2 p.m while the earlier match will feature No. 7 Georgia (16-4) against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (17-4) at 10 a.m.
