NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) was named the 2003 Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Year by the Big 12 Conference office Tuesday afternoon. Perianu is the first Sooner tennis player to earn conference player of the year honors since the Big 12 began play in 1997.

"Anda has definitely shown that she is the best player in the conference this season," said OU Head Coach Mark Johnson. "She's had a great year for us on many levels. She's proven herself in singles and doubles and has been a crucial element to the success of this team."

Perianu, the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year last year, has been on a tear in singles as of late winning 12 matches in a row to boost her record at No. 1 singles to 22-2. The Romania native is ranked 57th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in singles and sports an overall mark of 27-4 on the year. Her career winning percentage of .817 is the best in Oklahoma women's tennis history.

This is the latest accolade for Perianu, who last week earned All-Conference first team honors in singles for the second straight year. Perianu posted a 10-1 mark at No. 1 this spring against conference opponents to win the Big 12 Women's Tennis Position Championship at No. 1 singles. A preseason All-Big 12 selection, she has also been stellar against the best competition she has faced all year, going 5-1 against ranked opponents in singles.

Perianu also teamed with Sooner sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) to make the All-Big 12 Conference first team in doubles for the first time in her OU career. The duo is 38th in the latest ITA rankings and finished second in the conference regular season at No. 1 doubles with a record of 7-2. The pair has a record of 17-2 at No. 1 and are 22-3 overall.

Perianu has also proven herself off the court this season as she was named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team last week along with six of her OU teammates.
