NORMAN, Okla. - The Big 12 Conference office named 12 Oklahoma tennis players to the 2003 Academic All-Big 12 Teams on Tuesday.
Sooner sophomores Alex Nomicos (Targoviste, Romania), Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) earned 4.00 grade point averages. Nomicos is a marketing major while Braver and Griffin are both majoring in university studies.
Also making the first team were seniors Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia), Joni Helleland (Ada, Okla.), Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica), Elena Jirnova (Kiev, Ukraine), Chris Mitchell (Tulsa, Okla.), junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) and sophomore Matt Lopez (Enid, Okla.).
Those who made the first team maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average either cumulatively or over the previous two semesters. Bryntesson is currently majoring in public relations while Mendieta and Jirnova are studying for degrees in management information systems. Helleland is a management major, Perianu is majoring in pre-health & sports sciences while Mitchell is a zoology major and Lopez is majoring in accounting.
The OU women placed more players on the first team than any other team in the conference while the men also had two other players named to the second team. Senior Matt Ogle (Tulsa, Okla.) is finishing his degree in management and sophomore Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) is a construction science major.
All together, 63 student-athletes were named to the first and second teams. To qualify for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA either cumulatively or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
OU's men's and women's tennis teams are gearing up for the seventh annual Big 12 Championships this week in Kansas City, Mo. The fifth-seeded Sooner ladies face No. 12 seed Iowa State on Thursday, April 24, at noon while the seventh-seeded men's team is scheduled to play second-seeded Texas on Friday, April 25. That match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
