Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) won the 2003 Big 12 Women's Tennis Position Champion for No. 1 singles while senior Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) was named Co-Champion at No. 6 singles by the Big 12 Conference office on Tuesday.
Perianu finished the regular season with a 10-1 mark against conference opponents. Last year's Big 12 Newcomer of the Year beat out Texas' Kendra Strohm who finished with a record of 9-2. Perianu has won 10 matches in a row, sports a 20-2 record at No. 1 this spring and is ranked 80th by the ITA. She has been stellar against the best competition this year, going 5-1 against ranked opponents.
Mendieta finished tied at No. 6 singles with Colorado's Morgan Sall. Mendieta finished the season with a record of 7-3 at No. 6 and also went 1-0 at No. 5 to add to her conference victories. Mendieta beat Sall last weekend in Westminster, Colo., 6-2, 6-2.
Perianu and sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) finished second in the conference at No. 1 doubles behind Missouri's Urksa Juric and Katka Sevcikova. The Sooner duo is currently ranked 38th by the ITA and finished with a mark of 7-2 in conference play this spring.
The OU men also had a doubles team that narrowly missed winning the No. 2 doubles position championship. Sophomore Matt Long (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman Alexei Ivanov (Izhevsk, Russia) combined this spring for a 4-2 mark against Big 12 competition. The duo finished 11-2 overall at No. 2 and 17-4 on the year.
