Women Golfers Begin Postseason Play At Big 12 Tournament

The OU women's golf team will open up postseason play at the Big 12 Tournament April 21-23 at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia. The Big 12 teams will play at the 6,008-yard, par-72 golf course.

The three-day event will be formatted with 18 holes played each day. Each round will begin at 8 a.m. CDT.

Competing for the Sooners will be sophomore Emily Milberger (No.1), senior Allison Johnson (No.2), junior Lisa Meldrum (No. 3), freshman Amparo Gala (No.4) and junior Hope Edge (No.5).

The Sooners placed second in last year's Big 12 Championships behind Oklahoma State, which won with a score of 909, a three-stroke victory over the Sooners. However, in the 2000 Big 12 Championships, the Sooners defeated the Cowgirls with a one-stroke victory.

At the 2002 Big 12 Championships, Johnson finished third and Meldrum tied for 11th. At the 2001 event, Meldrum tied for first but lost in a playoff. Meldrum still holds the tournament record for lowest individual round with a 67, set in 2001.

Oklahoma has won four conference tournament championships in its history. In addition to the 2000 Big 12 title, the Sooners also took home Big Eight hardware in 1978, 1981 and 1991. Three OU players have won individual championships, all in Big Eight play. They were Lindsey Wetzel in 1976, Dorea Mitchell in 1981 and Cathy Stevens in 1991.

Sooners Win Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman
Oklahoma placed first at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic with a total of 916 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla., April 7-8. The Sooners won by 22 strokes to mark the third consecutive year they won the annual event.

Sophomore Emily Milberger earned her first collegiate victory with a score of 224 (+8). Three other Sooners also finished in the top five. Senior Allison Johnson earned fourth-place honors with a 230 (+14). Freshman Amparo Gala tied for fifth with junior teammate Lisa Meldrum after they both carded a 233 (+17). Junior Hope Edge tied for 27th with a 243 (+27).

Four other Sooners competed as individuals. Freshman Erin Goranson tied for 31st with a 244 while fellow freshman Cathryn Uselton tied for 58th with a 25. Sophomore Jenni Nimmo placed 78th with 266 total strokes while freshman Marie Turner recorded a 281 to tie for 87th.

Johnson's Big 12 Finale
Senior Allison Johnson is the lone senior on the Sooner squad this year. Johnson has been a tremendous contributor to the team and has recorded 15 top-10 finishes in her collegiate career. She was honored by head coach Carol Ludvigson following the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic for her stellar attitude and play the last four years.

Meldrum Leading the Sooners
Junior Lisa Meldrum has led the Sooners virtually all year. Her current stroke average (75.0) is the lowest on the team and ranks sixth in the Big 12 Conference. Meldrum has recorded four top-five and seven top-15 finishes this season. She tied for first last fall at the Dick McGuire Invitational.

First Victory for Milberger
Sophomore Emily Milberger earned her first collegiate victory at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic April 7-8 in Norman, Okla. Milberger recorded a three-round score of 224 (+8). It was the first time in head coach Carol Ludvigson's career that a No. 5 slot player won a tournament. Milberger has played in the No. 4 or 5 spots all year, but will be competing in the No. 1 position at the Big 12 Championships.

Success from Spain
Freshman Amparo Gala joined the Sooners this spring from Valencia, Spain and has made an immediate impact. Gala has played in all five tournaments this spring and finished in the top five at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational (fourth) and the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (fifth).

Sooner Smarts
Four members of the team were honored by the Big 12 Conference for their success in the classroom and on the golf course. Hope Edge, Allison Johnson, Lisa Meldrum and Emily Milberger were all first-team Academic All-Big 12 selections. In addition, Johnson and Milberger were two out of the three on the entire first team with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Johnson has recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in each of the three years she has been on the academic all-conference squad.

Coach Ludvigson Says...
"We are real excited because I feel everyone is in a better frame of mind, both physically and mentally. A lof of light bulbs have been turned on and everyone's mindset is good. We know that every shot counts in this tournament. We feel we have a shot at winning this and that's what we hope to do. "
