OU Women's Tennis Team Hosts No. 60 Kansas State

The No. 44 Oklahoma women's tennis team (8-1) returns home to begin conference play this Saturday against No. 60 Kansas State. Match time is scheduled for Noon at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
The Wildcats are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the league after beating Texas Tech, 5-2, on March 1. The Sooners lead the series with Kansas State, 16-7, and have a 7-3 lead in Norman. Last season, Kansas State beat OU, 6-1, in Manhattan, Kan. Sooner Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) score OU's only point on the afternoon with a straight-set win over KSU's Cheryl Mallaiah at No. 1 singles.
Sooners Impressive At UNLV Spring Invitational
OU went 2-1 last weekend at the UNLV Spring Invitational defeating Northern Arizona, 4-0, and No. 57 New Mexico, 6-1, to reach the final round against host-school UNLV. The 17th-ranked Lady Rebels got all they could handle from OU before pulling out a 4-2 victory and giving the Sooners their lone loss on the season.
OU Women Stay At No. 44 In ITA National Rankings
Despite their impressive showing at the UNLV Spring Invitational, the Sooners remained 44th in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. In the individual rankings, junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) is ranked 74th in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Perianu sports a 7-1 record at No. 1 singles and is 9-3 overall this season. She is well on her way to duplicating her successes of last season when she qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an individual. She was also named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Regionally, Perianu is ranked third.
In doubles, Perianu and sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) are currently 5-0 in match play after going 2-0 in Las Vegas. Perianu and Saluri are ranked 50th by the ITA and are ranked third in the regional rankings.
Johnson In 15th Year At Oklahoma
In his 15th year as head coach at OU, Mark Johnson began the 2003 season with three consecutive victories to add to his overall record of 231-112 record (.673).
Johnson led his 1999 team to the championship match at the Big 12 Tournament, earning Big 12 Tri-Coach of the Year honors and has also coached five consecutive teams to ITA Academic All-America team honors dating back to the 1997 season.
Johnson was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991, 1994 and 1995 after leading his teams to a combined 60-16 record in those three years. He has coached three NCAA doubles qualifiers in Nicole Kenneally and Jenny Del Valle (1994), Monique Malan and Karla Golfin (1996) and Angela Stroup and Viviana Mracnova (2000), and three singles qualifiers in Nicole Kenneally (1994), current OU assistant coach Raluca Gheorghe (1998) and current player Anda Perianu (2002).
