OU Women's Tennis Team Set To Take On No. 55 Kansas

The No. 44 Oklahoma women's tennis team continues conference play this Saturday, March 15, against No. 55 Kansas. Oklahoma is 1-0 in conference and 9-1 overall. The Jayhawks are 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the league with wins over No. 57 Nebraska and Iowa State. KU is the fourth-consecutive ranked opponent OU has faced this season and fifth overall. The Sooners are 3-1 against ranked opponents. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.

Last season, the Jayhawks topped the Sooners, 6-1, in Lawrence, Kan. Sooner Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) scored OU's only point on the afternoon with a straight-set win over KU's Cheryl Mallaiah at No. 1 singles.

Sooners Whip Wildcats For First Big 12 Win
OU overpowered then-No. 60 Kansas State, 5-2, for their first conference win on the season last Saturday in Norman at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center. Junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) and sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) remained unbeaten at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory while Sooners Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia) and Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) are 7-0 at No. 2 doubles following an 8-4 victory. The Sooners posted straight-set victories at the No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles positions to wrap up the victory.

Undefeated Perianu And Saluri Ranked 34th By ITA
The Sooners are 44th in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) is 94th in singles while she and sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) jumped to 34th in doubles.

Johnson In 15th Year At Oklahoma
In his 15th year as head coach at OU, Mark Johnson began the 2003 season with three consecutive victories to add to his overall record of 232-112 record (.674).

Johnson led his 1999 team to the championship match at the Big 12 Tournament, earning Big 12 Tri-Coach of the Year honors and has also coached five consecutive teams to ITA Academic All-America team honors dating back to the 1997 season.

Johnson was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991, 1994 and 1995 after leading his teams to a combined 60-16 record in those three years. He has coached three NCAA doubles qualifiers in Nicole Kenneally and Jenny Del Valle (1994), Monique Malan and Karla Golfin (1996) and Angela Stroup and Viviana Mracnova (2000), and three singles qualifiers in Nicole Kenneally (1994), current OU assistant coach Raluca Gheorghe (1998) and current player Anda Perianu (2002).
