NORMAN, Okla. - The 52nd-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team shut out its fifth consecutive opponent Saturday afternoon at the Santa Fe Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Sooners defeated Centenary, 7-0, to improve to 5-0 overall. The Ladies fell to 0-5 on the season.
The Sooners were dominant winning four singles matches and two doubles matches. Centenary defaulted the No. 5 and 6 singles positions as well as the No. 3 doubles position. Junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) remained undefeated (3-0) at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-3 victory over Anja Schmidt. Seniors Elena Jirnova (Kiev, Romania) and Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) recorded straight-set shut-outs as did freshman Joi-Lee Beachler (Oklahoma City, Okla.) who picked up her first win in match play as a Sooner.
In doubles, senior Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia) and sophomore Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) shut out Schmidt and Heather Kelly, 8-0, at the No. 1 position while sophomores Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) and Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) were victorious at the No. 2 position.
The Sooners go on the road next Thursday (Feb. 13) against regional opponent Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
