NORMAN, Okla. - The 55th-ranked Oklahoma women's tennis team upset No. 42 Tulsa, 4-3, Friday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. OU moved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 against regional opponents. The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-4 on the season.
Each team claimed three singles matches but the Sooners won all three doubles matches to claim victory. At the No. 3 singles position, senior Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia) was victorious in straight sets as was senior Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) at the No. 6 singles position. Sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) dropped the second set of her match but came back to win over Timberly Greenly, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
In doubles, the 36th-ranked duo of Saluri and senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) beat Alicia Pillay and Aleksandra Durska, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Bryntesson and sophomore Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) defeated Daniela Muscolino and Mariana Barrios, 8-6. And senior Elena Jirnova (Kiev, Ukraine) and Mendieta got past Donata Majauskaite and Zoe Buhagiar.
The Sooners have two weeks off before they are scheduled to play in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., on Feb. 28-March 2.
