Women's tennis senior dominates to become one of two left in national tournament
Oklahoma's senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) advanced to the championship match of the 2003 ITA National Women's Tennis Indoor Tournament with a tough three-set victory over seventh-seeded Amanda Johnson of Duke Saturday, at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Perianu won the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6. Perianu was tested in the second set dropping it, 6-4, but then came back strong to dominate the third and final set, 6-1.
Perianu's victory distinguishes her as the first OU women's tennis player to reach the final of this event, or any ITA/NCAA singles event, in head coach Mark Johnson's 15 years at OU. The 2003 Big 12 Player of the Year has won four matches at this prestigious tournament.
Perianu will now face second-seeded Agata Cioroch of Georgia in the title match Sunday, Nov. 9 at 12 p.m. EST.
The last time the two faced each other was in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Individual Championships. Cioroch defeated Perianu in a tough two set match, 6-2, 6-4.
The tournament can be followed on the ITA web site at www.itatennis.com and for results on Perianu visit www.soonersports.com.
Notes:
* Perianu has had an impressive fall season producing an overall record of 11-1.
* Perianu is the first Sooner woman to compete in this event since 1985 and first to reach the second round since Allison Ingram in 1984. The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national tournaments for collegiate tennis during the 2003-04 season.
* Perianu qualified for the event after winning the ITA Central Regional Championships in late October.
* The Romanian is considered by several to be the best tennis player to play for the Sooners. She is currently the only OU women's tennis player to have ever participated in back-to-back NCAA Individual Championships and is a two-time All-Big 12 singles selection.
