Women's tennis senior advances to round of 16
University of Oklahoma senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) upset top-seeded Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal-Berkley in the first round of the 2003 ITA National Women's Tennis Indoor Tournament Thursday at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Perianu won a tough first set in a tie-breaker but dominated the tie-break winning 7-2. After one game in the second set Kops-Jones retired, handing Perianu the match.
Perianu, the 2003 Big 12 Player of the Year, now faces Lauren Barnikow of Stanford in the round of 16 and is scheduled to play Friday Nov. 7 at 12.45 p.m. EST. Perianu has had an impressive fall season and owns a fall record of
8-1. She's the first Sooner woman to compete in this event since 1985 and first to reach the second round since Allison Ingram in 1984. The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of three national tournaments for collegiate tennis during the 2003-04 season.
Perianu qualified for the event after winning the ITA Central Regional Championships in late October. The Romanian is considered by several to be the best tennis player to play for the Sooners. She is currently the only OU women's tennis player to have ever participated in back-to-back NCAA Individual Championships and is a two-time All-Big 12 singles selection.
Perianu's opponent, Kops-Jones, won the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and is currently the No. 3 player in the nation in Preseason ITA Rankings.Kops-Jones is the third top-seeded woman to lose in the opening round and first since 2000 (and first due to retiring).
"It was a great win," said Perianu. "I've had tough draws in the last few national tournaments and to pull it out this time was a big step for me. This win gives me a boost of confidence for the remainder of the tournament."
"This is an outstanding win for Anda," said head coach Mark Johnson. "She started the match strong and proved again that she is one of the top players in the nation. Anda has a great chance of winning the tournament."
