Senior goes 6-0 in singles play
University of Oklahoma senior women's tennis player Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) dominated Sunday as she won the women's singles title at the 2003 ITA Women's Central Regional Championships at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Perianu fought through a tough three-setter against Gitte Ostermann of Nebraska to claim the title and become the central region's No. 1 ranked player.
"This win meant a lot to me. It was a goal of mine to not only win this tournament but qualify for national indoors," said Perianu. "I think I was mentally tough out there today and conditioning also played a huge factor in the match. We've been working hard on that and it's paying off."
The second-seeded Perianu dropped the first set, 7-5, but then came back to win the second, 6-4. Perianu proved too much for Ostermann in the third set, taking it 6-2 to capture the match and championship. The win automatically qualified Perianu for the 32 player National Indoor Tournament to be played in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 6-9.
