Sooner women look to qualify for National Team Indoor
The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team travels to Utah today to compete in the 2003 ITA Central Regional Championships at the Eccles Tennis Center, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The five day event which begins Wednesday, Oct., 21 features over 120 players from 26 college teams across the region.
Seven Sooners have been selected for the tournament. Senior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) and junior Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) will compete in the main draw singles action which begins on Thursday at 8.30 a.m. Freshman Irina Lykina (Kazan, Russia) and Amanda Pratzel (St.Louis, Mo.), sophomore Joi-Lee Beachler (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and juniors Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) and Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) will compete in the qualifying singles draw beginning Wednesday at 8.30 a.m.
All three OU doubles teams will compete in main draw action, inlcuding an impressive No. 2 seed for Perianu and Saluri.
This event determines which team will represent the region at the National Team Indoor Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. in November.
"This tournament is great because we not only get tough match practice to prepare us for the spring, but we get the chance to qualify for the National Team Indoor Tournament," said head coach Mark Johnson.
Five Sooners will be looking to advance to the main draw tomorrow to increase OU's chances of being selected for the National Team Indoor Tournament.
