Perianu Named Women's Tennis Big 12 Newcomer of the Year

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma sophomore Anda Perianu was honored by the head coaches of the Big 12 Conference as the 2002 women's tennis newcomer of the year. Perianu received the award after going 22-6 overall in singles competition in her first season as a Sooner. The Braila, Romania, native finished the spring season 18-5, winning her last seven matches of the season. She was recently named to the All-Big 12 team and is currently ranked No. 73 in the ITA National Collegiate Poll.

Eight other individual Big 12 awards were given out on Wednesday. The 2002 men's player of the year was Jean Simon from Texas and the men's newcomer of the year was Ante Martijevic of Texas A&M. The Big 12 men's freshman of the year was awarded to Benjamin Becker of Baylor, while the men's coach of the year award will be shared by Baylor's Matt Knoll and Texas' Matt Center.

The 2002 women's player of the year was Alena Jecminkova of Kansas State and the league freshman of the year was awarded to Patricia Graf of Baylor. The women's coach of the year award went to Kilmeny Waterman of Kansas.

The selection for the NCAA Tournament will be Thurs., May 2. The Sooners last made an NCAA appearance during the 1997-98 season, but fell to Kansas, 5-2, in the opening round.
