NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team defeated No. 66 Nebraska, 4-1, on Thursday in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament in College Station, Texas. The No. 53 Sooners have won five consecutive league matches and haven't lost since a 4-3 Nebraska win on April 7. Oklahoma improves to 16-7 on the season and will play Texas A&M tomorrow in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament. The Cornhuskers drop to 13-9 on the year and are out of the tournament.

The Sooners failed to get the doubles point for the first time in five matches, but won four singles matches to take the victory. Sophomore Anda Perianu continues to shine, improving to 21-6 on the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nebraska's Gitte Ostermann at No. 1 singles. Freshman Bethany Griffin picked up the 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Cornhusker's Amy Frisch at the No. 4 spot, and is right behind Perianu with a 20-8 record in singles action. Junior Melissa Mendieta and freshman Jessica Braver also picked up wins at the No. 5 (6-4, 6-4) and No. 6 (6-4, 6-2) spots, respectively, defeating NU's Rose Ketmayura and Anna Oehme.

"We were real tough in singles today," said OU Head coach Mark Johnson. "We came in and got the first set in five of our six singles matches. After dropping the doubles point, it was important to get ahead in singles." "We're kind of patched together right now due to injuries. A&M is not a team you want to play when you aren't 100%. But we're really looking forward to the match. This is the kind of match you work for. It should be a good fun match."

Oklahoma returns to action tomorrow against Texas A&M in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Texas A&M Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
