Sooner Relay Meets NCAA T&F Provisional Mark

NORMAN, Okla. - It was going to take more than stormy weather to halt the 33rd annual John Jacobs Invitational Saturday for the University of Oklahoma track and field teams. The only home meet of the 2002 outdoor season for OU because of ongoing construction, the Sooners were looking for a break in the rainy weather they had experienced most of the outdoor season.

When the rain and storms finally quit Saturday afternoon, the competition began and the OU men's 1600-meter relay took full advantage of the clearing weather, posting a 3:06.49 to win the event and post its first NCAA provisional time of the outdoor season.

Senior Ernest Lewis ran the opening leg and got the Sooners out to a lead they would not lose. Raoul Harvey, Aldwyn Sappleton and Moses Washington ran the final three legs as OU held off an all-star team of former Sooners and Barton County to win with a time that was nearly four seconds faster than any previous 1600-meter relay mark this season. It also beat the NCAA provisional standard by just over one second.

Barton County won a total of 21 events and the Sooners won 11 in the 38-event meet. The only events not held today, the A division of the men's and women's pole vault, will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Hyleas Fountain of Barton was a triple collegiate winner, finishing first among the collegians in the 100-meter hurdles, the triple jump and the high jump.

Double winners for OU included Sappleton, who ran the third leg of OU's winning 1600-meter relay and ran a season-best 1:52.00 to win the 800, LaKisha Robinson and Lameisa Thomas, who were on OU's winning 400- and 1600-meter relays, Tiffany Davis, on OU's 400-meter relay and the winner of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. LaShaunta Moore of Barton won the 100 and 200 and Barton's Jerry LaPoint took the discus and hammer to be double winners.

OU's Amanda Warehime and Megan Crystal posted season bests to finish one-two in the shot put, then reversed the finish with Crystal posting a season best to win the discus. The discus mark of 142-9 for Crystal also is a career best for the junior from Woodward.

The Sooners travel to Waco, Texas, next weekend for the Michael Johnson Invitational. OU also announced that the Sooner Outdoor, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 27, will be cancelled. Instead the Sooners who do not qualify for the Drake Relays will head to Denton, Texas, for the North Texas State Invitational.
