NORMAN- The Oklahoma volleyball team mounted a comeback like none other this season, as they battled back from a two game deficit, only to be narrowly defeated by the Kansas Jayhawks 30-26, 30-19, 21-20, 21-30, 15-11 inside the Howard McCasland Field House Saturday night. The contest marked the first five game match for OU since the beginning of last season. With the loss Oklahoma fell to 4-15 (2-9 Big 12), while Kansas improved to 15-5 (6-5 Big 12)
"Tonight was a victory for us in many ways," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We are dissapointed in the outcome but the team had four outstanding games tonight. They found a new fire and played their best defense this season. This team proved to themselves how well they can play when they work at it. I think this will motivate the team for the rest of the season."
Senior setter Jessica Barney returned after missing the previous game due to minor knee surgery and recorded a double-double with 47 assists and 14 digs. Junior Christina Barlow notched her first double-double of the season as well, pounding out 13 kills and digging a career-high 19 balls. Sophomore middle blocker Candice Woods led OU with 16 kills. Seniors Megan O'Connell and Denise Griffin put away 11 kills apiece, as did freshman Jennifer Mosso. Griffin hit .429 (11K-2E-21TA), a career-high. Freshman libero Tara Birkinbine also contributed a career-high 16 digs.
"I was impressed with the way that OU battled back after being down 2-0," said Kansas Head Coach Ray Bechard. "We had to play really well to get this victory. Coach Mahi and his staff have really made progress with their team since we saw them earlier in the season."
Kansas swept OU in Lawrence, Kan., on Sept. 21.
Four Kansas attackers recorded double digits, led by Josianne Lima who put away 15 balls. Sarah Rome also recorded 15 kills, to go along with a match-high 20 digs.
"We played amazing defense tonight and our hitters were swinging away," said OU freshman Tara Birkinbine. "This game was a great motivator for us and we feel like we shouldn't lose another game this season."
Oklahoma returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Texas A&M. The Sooners return home next Saturday, Nov. 2 for a 7 p.m. match with the Missouri Tigers. The match will follow the OU football game against Colorado, which is set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. OU students with a valid student I.D. are admitted free.
