Anda Perianu Moves On At Central Region Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team went 2-4 in singles and 2-2 in doubles at the Omni Hotels Women's Tennis Central Region Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Thursday. The Sooners are competing in a field that includes Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Creighton, Denver, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Montana, Montana State, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Southwest Missouri State, St. Louis, Tulsa, Utah, Utah State, Wichita State and Wyoming.

In singles, junior Anda Perianu (Braila, Romania) advanced to the round of 32 with a straight-set victory over Missouri's Mary Barry (6-4, 6-2) Senior Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) won her way into the main draw before falling in the round of 64. Seniors Annette Bryntesson (Perth, Australia) and Elena Jirnova (Kiev, Ukraine) and sophomore Bethany Griffin (Amarillo, Texas) were all defeated in first round of the main draw.

In the doubles main draw, Bryntesson and Griffin moved on as did Perianu and sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Mones, Iowa). The team of freshman Joi-Lee Beachler (Okla. City, Okla.) and sophomore Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) were defeated as was Jirnova and Mendieta.

Play is scheduled to continue Friday at 9 a.m.
