NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team went 5-3 in the opening qualifying rounds of the Omni Hotels Women's Tennis Central Region Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Wednesday. The Sooners are competing in a field that includes Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Creighton, Denver, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Montana, Montana State, Nebraska, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Southwest Missouri State, St. Louis, Tulsa, Utah, Utah State, Wichita State and Wyoming.
Senior Melissa Mendieta (San Jose, Costa Rica) and freshman Yalanti Santi each went 2-0 on the day. Sophomore Heather Saluri (Des Moines, Iowa) went 1-1 while sophomore Jessica Braver (Edmond, Okla.) and freshman Joi-Lee Beachler (Oklahoma City, Okla.) were eliminated in the round of 64.
Mendieta and Santi will compete in the qualifying round of 16 at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
