Women's Tennis Set For Season Opener With Southern Nazarene

NORMAN, Okla. - In its first match of the 2002 season, the Oklahoma women's tennis team will compete against Southern Nazarene on Friday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. The match will be played at the Woodlake Racquet Club, located at 6901 NW 63rd St. in Oklahoma City.
The Sooners are coming off a 6-13 season and return three juniors and welcome five newcomers to the squad. Veterans Annette Bryntesson, Joni Helleland and Melissa Mendieta will lead the team, while junior Elena Jirnova, sophomore Anda Perianu and freshmen Jessica Braver, Bethany Griffin and Heather Saluri will contribute immediately in their first season as Sooners.
"We're just really anxious to play right now, " said OU head coach Mark Johnson. "We're playing well and looking forward to a new season. We have five new players that are all in the top six so we're looking to have a good season."
Oklahoma plays its first home match at the newly constructed Headington Family Tennis Center on Friday, March 1, against Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m.
