NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma mens' tennis team fell to yet another ranked opponent on Friday at the Westwood Tennis Center in Norman, dropping a 6-1 decision to the 54th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. The Sooners slipped to 2-9 on the season and 0-7 in Big 12 action. With the victory, KU improved to 14-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Sooner senior Julio Martinez scored Oklahoma's only point with a 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 win over Eleazar Magallan at No. 1 singles. The match marked Martinez's first Big 12 Conference win of the season. In doubles play, sophomores Matt Ogle and Chris Mitchell grabbed an 8-6 victory over Kansas' Pete Stroer and Quentin Blakeney at the top doubles spot. The tandem's win did not prove to be enough as KU took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to capture the doubles point.
Friday's match was likely the last time the Sooners and Jayhawks will meet in men's tennis action. Kansas recently announced that it will discontinue the program at the end of the season.
OU finishes the regular season on the road, traveling to Nebraska on Thursday, April 19, for a 1 p.m. match and then on to Colorado on April 21 for a 10 a.m. dual.
