Sooner freshmen Dan Strong and Veronica Claybourne finished ninth in the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon held Saturday. The meet marked the first time for either to compete in the five-event pentathlon.
KSU's Austra Skujyte, competeing unattached, won the women's event with with 4,327 points, setting three meet records in the process. eclipsing the old meet record of 3,950 Grant Dennis, also competing unattached, came from behind to win on the men's side, not leading until the final event of the day. He finished with 3,780 points.
Strong finished with 3,079 points. He picked up the most points in the high jump (6-4.75/758) and in the 1000 (2:59.06/673). Claybourne finished with 2,842 points. She picked up 724 points in the high jump with her 5-2.50 effort and 692 points in the 60 hurdles with her 10.11.
A relatively new event for men, Strong's total ranks second all-time for OU. Claybourne's total places her eighth on the all-time women's list.
The Sooner track and field teams are off from competition until Jan. 12 when the vaulters go to the USATF Pole Vault Summit. The rest of the team returns to action Jan. 19 when the Sooners host the OU Classic.
