PROVO, Utah - The University of Oklahoma dropped a close match in the finals of the WingspanBank.com/World Team Tennis Regional Championship to host BYU today at the BYU Indoor tennis courts. The Cougars slipped past the Sooners, 25-20, earning the right to compete at the national tournament in October. Oklahoma defeated Weber State, 29-25, in yesterday's opening round match.
The tournament included men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The scoring for each category goes to six, using no-ad scoring. The total number of games each team wins are added to attain a final score.
Senior Viviana Mracnova, an All-Big 12 performer last season, picked up the Sooners lone win as she cruised to a 6-1 victory over BYU's Jodi Richardson. Mracnova and sophomore Annette Bryntesson suffered a 6-4 loss in the women's doubles category to Richardson and Lu Oswald.
On the men's side, Carlos Lozano defeated Sooner sophomore Matt Ogle, 6-2, in the singles match. Ogle and fellow sophomore Chris Mitchell lost a 6-3 decision to Lozano and Gert Vilms in men's doubles action. Mracnova and Mitchell teamed for the mixed doubles match, losing a hard-fought 6-5 match to Lindsay Ferrell and Vilms.
Weber State captured the win in the third-place match, 25-19, over Utah State.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Feb. 2 when they host Oral Roberts at 2 p.m. The women's squad takes on Southern Nazarene on Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. at the Santa Fe Indoor Tennis Courts in Oklahoma City.
