NORMAN, Okla. - The 52nd-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team defeated Nebraska, 7-0, this afternoon at the Westwood Tennis Courts in Norman. The victory was the first conference win for OU this season improving their record to 1-4 in conference play and 14-9 overall. The loss drops the Huskers to 0-7 in conference play and 5-9 on the season.
In doubles competition, OU seniors Charlie Roberson and Rick Warren beat NU's Andrew Wiese and Kai Rieke, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 position, NU's Fungai Tongoona and Jorge Abos Sanchez overpowered senior Dusty Beard and freshman Tobias Kronlein, 8-3. Senior Jeremy Dunham and junior Julio Martinez clinched the doubles point for OU ousting Adnan Hadzialic and Ryan Haith, 8-6.
"We just kept our focus and we were able to hit the right shots for the win," said Dunham. "This win was a good emotional lift for our team."
In singles competition, the Sooners were dominant winning all six matches. Beard defeated Abos Sanchez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 1 position. Roberson, Martinez, Warren and Kronlein all won in straight sets as well. Dunham was pushed by Hadzialic but came back to win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 3 position.
"This win was huge for our team especially after the tough loss at OSU," said Oklahoma Head Coach Paul Lockwood. "You always wonder how your team will respond and I was really proud of our guys today. I think our next match against Texas Tech will be the most important one of the season."
The Sooners continue conference play tomorrow against the 63rd-ranked Red Raiders. Match time is set for noon at the Westwood Tennis Courts.
