NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma men's tennis players are competing in the Region V ITA Mid-American Championships at the University of Tulsa this weekend. After two rounds of singles play, sophomore Tobias Kronlein in still alive in the Round of 16. Doubles action continues today.
In a first round match, Kronlein defeated No. 16-seed Vedran Vidovic of Indiana State in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. He then advanced to the Round of 16 with another three-set victory over Tulsa's Shri Sudhakar, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. Kronlein will play second-seeded Rodrigo Echagaray of Kansas later today.
Sophomore Matt Ogle battled to a first round win over No. 13-seed Mirko Jovanovic of Colorado, 7-6, 6-4, before bowing out to Indiana State's Dalibor Mihailovic, 6-3, 6-4 in his second match. Senior Julio Martinez dropped his opening round match to Lance Mills of Nebraska, 6-3, 6-4, while sophomore Chris Mitchell fell to another Husker, Kai Rieke, 6-2, 6-0.
Ogle and Martinez suffered an 8-4 loss to Lovre Biajikovic and Mihailovic of Indiana State. Mitchell and Kronlein will play another ISU tandem today, Vidovic and Jonas Piibor.
Singles and doubles finalists in the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2001National Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., Feb. 15-18.
