OU Men's Tennis Competes in Navy Invitational

Annapolis, Md. - University of Oklahoma men's tennis players were in competition for the first time this fall at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. this weekend. Senior Julio Martinez and sophomores Chris Mitchell, Tobias Kronlein and Matt Ogle represented the Sooners.

In Flight 1 singles action, Kronlein compiled a 2-1 record. He defeated Virginia's Tom Coker, 6-4, 6-1, and Navy's Grant Carona, 6-3, 6-0, and dropped a 6-4, 6-2, decision to Ricky Heath of Illinois State.

Martinez edged Brian Hunter of Virginia in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, in Flight 2. He picked up his second victory of the weekend against Chris McGrath of Navy, 7-6, 7-5. His only loss came to Jason Smit of Illinois State, 6-4, 6-3.

Ogle competed in Flight 3, grabbing wins over Virginia's Jason Romesburg, 6-3, 6-1, and Navy's Ryan Osgood, 6-1, 6-4. He fell in three sets to Yew Ming Si of Illinois State, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, in his only loss.

Mitchell dropped Navy's Jim Shaughnessy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, in Flight 4 action. The Jenks, Okla., native lost a tough three-set match to Mike Duquette of Navy, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 and fell 6-3, 6-4, to Brent Steven of Illinois State.

In Flight 1 doubles, Kronlein and Mitchell teamed up for wins over Virginia (8-5) and Navy (8-4). Their only loss came to Illinois State by a score of 8-1.

Martinez and Ogle won two of their three matches at Flight 2 doubles, dropping Illinois State, 8-6, and Virginia, 9-8. The tandem's only loss came to Navy, 8-3.
