Sooners down Texas Tech, 7-2

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma womens tennis team tallied its sixth Big 12 win by defeating Texas Tech, 7-2, today at the Westwood Tennis Center in Norman. OU, winners of three of its last four conference matches, improves to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the league. The loss drops the Red Raiders to 2-8 overall and a Big 12 record of 4-15.

The Sooners opened the match strong by taking victories in five of the singles competition. Each Oklahoma win was accomplished in straight sets. At the No. 1 position, Raluca Gheorghe defeated Techs Zana Zlebnik, 6-2, 6-2. Both Danielle Knipp and Jennie Hamilton only lost two games a piece as they won 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively, for the Sooners. OUs Kristin Guilford picked up another victory by set scores of 7-6 and 6-4 over Noel Ruiz. Angela Stroup captured the final singles win by a Texas Tech default at the No. 6 spot. Viviana Mracnova, ranked 100th in the nation, pushed her match to a third set before losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to Techs Alenka Ovin.

Gheorghe and Knipp lost for only the third time together this season as they lost a close match, 9-7, to Zlebnik and Ovin at the No. 1 doubles slot. Regulars as the No. 3 Sooner doubles pairing, Hamilton and Stroup saw action at No. 2 doubles and came away victorious, 8-4, over Meyer and Ruiz. Texas Tech defaulted its second match of the afternoon at the No. 3 doubles competition to give Oklahoma the final match point.

The Sooners will close out their final homestand of the 1999 season tomorrow versus the 48th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks at Noon. The match will again be held at the Westwood Tennis Center.
