Men's Tennis Defeats Kansas

Norman, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 42 Kansas 5-2 Friday at the Westwood Tennis Courts in Norman, Okla. For the first time on the season, the Sooners were able to garner a victory after losing the point in doubles. Oklahoma moves to 10-11 on the season, while Kansas drops to 9-3.

"This was a great win for the team," said Head Coach Paul Lockwood. "This is one of the toughest schedules in 12 years that I have seen one of my teams face. The guys fought hard and played well, and it was great to win those big matches."

Kansas lead the contest after taking the point in doubles. The Jayhawks won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The duo of Charlie Roberson and Rick Warren were able to defend the No. 21 ranking by ousting Ed Dus and Kenny Powell at the No.1 slot 8-4.

Oklahoma took five of the six singles matches. The Sooners scored first with junior Rick Warren. Warren ousted Alex Barragan 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Other netters to garner victories in singles were Dusty Beard, Charlie Roberson, Jeremy Dunham and Jave Rush. Beard left the contest against Luis Uribe, who is nationally ranked No. 21, with the win 6-2, 6-1. Roberson followed Beard taking the victory against Kenny Powell in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. KU's Alex Barragan fell to Dunham 7-6, 6-3, while Rush rounded out the lineup with a win over Bryan Maier 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

"I think we were able to get started with Dusty (Beard). He (Beard) came into the match as a huge underdog against Luis Uribe. Uribe in the No.1 player the Region in singles," said Lockwood. "Beard was ready to play and he got that tight win."
