PALM CITY, Fla. –
Ryder Cowan finished tied for first to lead No. 14 Oklahoma to a seventh-place finish at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday. The event featured 16 teams, including 10 inside the top 25 and half of the nation's top 10.
Cowan played his final nine holes at 6-under par to force a playoff with Florida State's Tyler Weaver, but fell on the first playoff hole to finish tied for first and as the runner-up.
Oklahoma (7th, -23) posted rounds of 274-282-273 at the par-71 Floridian National Golf Club, finishing behind four top-10 teams and two others just outside the top 25 in the 54-hole event. The Sooners' opening round of 274 had them in seventh after Monday's first round, but a 2-under afternoon round dropped them out of contention for the team title. Oklahoma closed with an 11-under 273 in the final round to move up one spot on the leaderboard and secure seventh.
Cowan (T1, -15) fired rounds of 65-68-65 to share medalist honors and force the playoff. The Haskins Award watch list selection opened with a bogey-free 65 and followed with a 3-under 68 in round two. He entered the final round two shots off the lead and made the turn tied for third. Cowan eagled his 10th hole and added three pars before going eagle-birdie-birdie on holes 5 through 7 to take the lead. Weaver matched with a par on 18 to force the playoff, where Cowan came up just short.
Jase Summy (T23, -6) matched Cowan's 6-under 65 in the final round to tie for 23rd after sitting at even par through 36 holes.
A trio of Sooners finished outside the top 40, led by
Clark Van Gaalen in 45th at 2-under.
Cameron Cheek tied for 62nd at 3-over, while
Coltrane Mittag placed 75th at 8-over.
No. 10 Texas Tech won the team title at 45-under, six shots ahead of No. 1 Auburn. No. 6 Texas (-34) placed third, followed by No. 7 Arkansas in fourth. Florida State, led by individual champion Tyler Weaver, rounded out the top five at 30-under.
The Sooners travel to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex next week for the Maridoe Intercollegiate at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas. The two-day, 54-hole event is set for March 30-31.
