NORMAN – University of Oklahoma men's golf head coach
Jonathan Moore announced Monday the hiring of Ruben Sondjaja (sawnd-JEYE-uh) as the program's associate head coach.
Sondjaja arrives in Norman after three seasons at Illinois, where he helped guide the Fighting Illini to NCAA Regional titles in 2024 and 2025 and the 2024 NCAA Championship stroke-play title. Regarded as one of the nation's rising coaches, Sondjaja played a key role in the development of four All-Americans during his time in Urbana-Champaign.
"Ruben is one of the brightest young coaches in college golf, and we're thrilled to welcome him to Oklahoma," Moore said. "He has a proven track record of developing elite players, recruiting at the highest level and helping teams compete for championships. Ruben's passion for student-athlete development, his work ethic and his vision for building a championship culture align perfectly with what we're building here at Oklahoma. He will have an immediate impact on our program."
A native of Sydney, Australia, Sondjaja starred at Iowa State from 2013-17, finishing his career with the third-lowest scoring average in program history. During his collegiate career, he climbed into the top 100 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking, posted two top-10 finishes at the Big 12 Championship and helped lead the Cyclones to NCAA Championship appearances in 2014 and 2017.
Following graduation, Sondjaja competed professionally on PGA Tour Canada and the PGA Tour of Australasia from 2017-19 before returning to Iowa State as the program's graduate assistant for operations. In that role, he coordinated operations for both the men's and women's golf programs while also serving as an assistant coach for the Cyclone women's team during the 2020-21 season, helping Iowa State earn its 11th consecutive NCAA Championship berth.
Sondjaja was promoted to Iowa State's top men's golf assistant coach in 2021 and helped the Cyclones qualify for the 2023 NCAA Norman Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
He joined Illinois in 2023 under longtime head coach Mike Small and quickly became an integral part of one of the nation's premier programs. During his three seasons with the Fighting Illini, Illinois captured 12 team titles, including NCAA Regional championships in both 2024 and 2025. The Fighting Illini also led the field after 72 holes of stroke play at the 2024 NCAA Championship before advancing to match play, with two golfers sharing runner-up medalist honors. In 2025-26, Illinois was ranked in the top 20 throughout the season, won three times and finished as the runner-up at the Big Ten Championship.
"I'm honored to join the Oklahoma men's golf program and work alongside Coach Moore and Coach Rainer," Sondjaja said. "Oklahoma is one of the standard-bearers in college golf, and the vision Coach Moore has for this new era of OU Men's Golf is incredibly exciting. I've been fortunate to learn from outstanding coaches throughout my career, and I'm especially grateful for the experiences and relationships that have helped shape my development along the way. I'm excited to bring those lessons to Norman as we build on Oklahoma's championship tradition, invest in our student-athletes and pursue the highest level of success both on and off the course."
A three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection, Sondjaja earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Iowa State in 2017 and completed his master's degree in accounting 2021. He also served in several student-athlete leadership roles, including on Iowa State's Athletics Council and as co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
