Stringfellow Named USTFCCCA Men's NCAA DI National Athlete of the Week

January 19, 2026 | Track and Field

NORMAN — Oklahoma track and field junior Kennedy Stringfellow was named the USTFCCCA Men's NCAA DI National Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance at the Owen Hewett Invitational, the association announced Monday.

The transfer from Mississippi State has already made a significant impact for the Sooners in just his second week of competition. A native of Brandon, Miss., the long jumper finished first at the Owen Hewett Invitational on Jan. 16 by a large margin, leaping a career-best 8.29m (27'2.50"), shattering the previous OU school record and leading both the NCAA and the world.

"Kennedy's performance was special," said head track and field coach James Thomas. "It's the kind of jump you rarely see indoors, especially in January. What makes it even more exciting is how eager he is to get back to work with Coach Davis and keep pushing to unlock something truly special."

Stringfellow's accolade marks the first national honor an Oklahoma athlete has received during the indoor season.

"I'm extremely proud of Kennedy's performance this past weekend," said assistant coach Austin Davis. "He's been working really hard on cleaning up some technical errors, and it's great to see that hard work pay off. Twenty-seven feet and an early world lead was a great early birthday jump for him."

The Sooners return to action Friday, Jan. 23 at the Stan Scott Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, and the JD Martin Invitational in Norman.
