Cheek, Cowan Power Sooners to Fifth in Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma men's golf closed out the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon, finishing the 54-hole tournament in a tie for fifth place.
Two Sooners – Cameron Cheek and Ryder Cowan – finished in the top 20, with the underclassmen finishing 12th and 20th, respectively. Oklahoma (5, +19) rose five spots up the leaderboard over the final 36 holes after finishing day one in 10th place, but wasn't able to get into contention at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club.
Cheek, an Owasso, Okla., product made his debut in the lineup for the Sooners this week, finishing 12th. The freshman posted rounds of 73-75-71 to post his first career top-15 finish and notched a team-best 35 pars.
Cowan, a sophomore from Edmond, finished 20th, his sixth top-20 finish in seven events this year. After posting an 80 (+8) in the first round, he signed for 68-72 to finish strong at the event.
Jase Summy (T21, +5) carded a 74 (+2) in the final round, a counting score for OU, and finished tied for 21st.
Drew Goodman (T63, +11) and Asher Whitaker (T79, +21) closed out the lineup card, finishing outside of the top 60.
No. 2 Auburn won the team race in dominant fashion, finishing as the only team in the red to win by 10 strokes. Host team UNLV finished second, followed by New Mexico, No. 9 Virginia and then the Sooners.
UNLV's Caden Fiorini (-9) notched a wire-to-wire victory in the individual race.
The field in Vegas was stacked with 13 top-50 teams, nine of which the Sooners finished in front of.
The Sooners return to action at the Pauma Valley Invitational in San Diego, slated for March 17-18.
