ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Sixth-ranked Oklahoma advanced to match play at the SEC Championship on Friday, finishing fourth in stroke play as senior
Drew Goodman claimed runner-up honors individually.
The Sooners (4, -22) earned the No. 4 seed in the eight-team match play bracket and will face No. 8 Florida in Saturday morning's quarterfinal at the par-70 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. The winner will meet either top-seeded No. 2 Auburn or eighth-seeded No. 3 Texas in the afternoon semifinal.
The Sooners and Gators have never met in a match play setting.
The five-day championship features 54 holes of stroke play, followed by match play on Saturday and Sunday to determine the team champion.
Oklahoma stumbled early on Friday, playing the front nine at 4-over and watching its cushion above the cut line shrink. A surge of 12 birdies on the back nine helped the Sooners steady the ship and finish with a 4-under 276, becoming one of four teams to shoot 20-under or better across 54 holes.
Goodman (2, -11) was outstanding all week, earning a runner-up finish, his best at a conference championship as a Sooner. The All-American played the front nine even-par before charging late, birdieing the 13th to tie the lead and moving ahead with birdies at 15 and a 40-foot putt at 16. Auburn's Jackson Koivun answered with birdies at 17 and 18 to claim the title, making Goodman the SEC runner-up. Goodman's performance marked his 10th career top-five finish and 31st top 20, with four career runner-up placements.
Koivun became the first SEC golfer to win back-to-back individual titles since 1976.
Sophomore
Ryder Cowan (T16, -4) notched his ninth top-20 finish of the season, tying for 16th after a steady even-par 70 on Friday.
Jase Summy (T22, -3)carded a 69 (-1) to finish 22nd, while freshman
Clark Van Gaalen shared 26th at 2-under for the week.
Matthew Troutman (T51, +3) signed for his third straight 71 (+1) to finish 51
st overall.
As a team, Oklahoma ranked third in pars (191) and totaled 47 birdies, the sixth-most in the field.
The Sooners will tee off against the Gators at 7:30 a.m. CT Saturday from the 10th tee. Quarterfinal matches will not be broadcast but can be followed via live scoring on Golfstat. SEC Network+ will carry Saturday afternoon's semifinals, with the championship match set for live coverage on SEC Network Sunday.
